Director's Statement

My primary purpose in making this film is to demonstrate how the Iraq war creates victims not
only in the Middle East, but here at home as well. The action of the film involves a Marine
returning from two tours in “the sandbox,” as the soldiers call Iraq. He becomes confused and
breaks into a couples’ rural home in the middle of the night. I wanted to explore how an
ordinary couple reacts to this sudden violent event and in so doing, look at how violence
breeds violence. There are no “bad guys” here, just three people who are all equal victims of a
situation that gets out of control.

This film was inspired by terrifying true events in my own life. My hope is that the film will
challenge viewers to question their feelings about how violence affects and informs their
actions. The film does not take a political perspective, but a very human one. It is meant to
provoke an intense reaction to a dangerous situation, and leave viewers considering what they
might have done in the same situation. Ultimately, I made this short film to explore how
compassion and understanding may be the only way to end the escalation and perpetuation of
violence. I wanted to look at the reaction of two people and hope that it can provoke a
discussion as to how these same reactions play out on the world’s stage today.
